How to Read a TAF: The 5 Codes That Catch Drone Pilots Out

It's 5:30am, you've got a 7am inspection job booked, and the TAF for Perth reads something like:
TAF YPPH 150402Z 1506/1612 25012KT 9999 SCT025 BECMG 1508/1510 30018G30KT TEMPO 1510/1514 4000 SHRA BKN012
Every one of our instructors at FlyIQ reads forecasts like this daily in their operational work with DIWA — and every one of them will tell you the same thing: the pilots who get caught out by weather usually didn't misread the forecast. They read the easy parts and skipped the codes that actually decide whether the job flies. Here are the five that matter most.
1. The times are in UTC, not local time
Everything in a TAF — the issue time, the validity period, every change group — is in Coordinated Universal Time, marked with a Z. Perth is UTC+8, so 1506/1612 doesn't mean "6am to 12 noon"; it means the forecast runs from 2pm local on the 15th to 8pm local on the 16th. The single most common TAF mistake we see from new RePL holders is planning a morning job against an afternoon forecast window. Before you read anything else in a TAF, convert the times. Write the local times over the top if you have to — there's no prize for doing the arithmetic in your head at 5:30am.
2. BECMG — the change with a window, not a moment
BECMG 1508/1510 30018G30KT means the wind is becoming a gusty 30-knot westerly — but not at a fixed time. The change happens gradually at some point within that two-hour window, and the forecast doesn't promise when. The professional habit is to plan against the worse condition from the start of the BECMG window, not the end. If the deterioration window opens at your planned launch time, assume the deterioration is already there. Treating BECMG's start time as a deadline rather than the beginning of uncertainty has scrubbed more than one job that should never have been attempted.
3. TEMPO and INTER — the fine print that grounds you
TEMPO 1510/1514 4000 SHRA BKN012 means that at any time in that four-hour period, temporary deteriorations of 30 to 60 minutes each are expected: visibility down to 4,000 metres in rain showers, with broken cloud at 1,200 feet. INTER is its Australian cousin — same idea, but the deteriorations last under 30 minutes. The trap is psychological: the base forecast looks flyable, and TEMPO reads like an afterthought. It isn't. For RPA work, a TEMPO deterioration can arrive exactly when your aircraft is mid-task — so the question isn't "is the base forecast okay?" but "can I safely hold, land or recover if the TEMPO conditions arrive during my flight?" If the answer is no, the TEMPO is the forecast.
4. The G in the wind group
30018G30KT — westerly at 18 knots, gusting 30. New pilots read the 18 and check it against their aircraft's wind limit; experienced pilots read the 30, because gusts are what actually upset a multirotor near structures, and 30 knots is roughly 55 km/h arriving without an appointment. As a working rule from our operations team: if the gust figure exceeds your aircraft's rated wind limit, the mean wind is irrelevant — plan as if the gust is the wind. And remember the TAF gives wind at 10 metres above ground in open terrain; around towers, tree lines and pit walls the local reality can be nastier than the number.
5. Cloud that matters and cloud that doesn't
SCT025 is scattered cloud at 2,500 feet — usually irrelevant for operations capped at 400 feet. BKN012 is broken cloud at 1,200 feet — getting closer to your world, and often travelling with the rain that produced it. The codes are FEW, SCT, BKN and OVC in increasing coverage, with heights in hundreds of feet. The habit worth building: don't just ask whether cloud is below 400 feet (it rarely is in a TAF); ask what the cloud is telling you about visibility, showers and light. BKN012 with SHRA means your visual line of sight, your camera exposure and your airframe's tolerance for water are all about to be tested at once.
